Why Choose This Experience?
Authentic Waterfall Purification in Nature
The Otafuku Waterfall at Shoko-ji Temple has long been revered as a sacred waterfall associated with Otafuku Okami, a deity believed to bring blessings and enrich people’s lives.
Surrounded by lush nature and blessed with abundant, clear water, the waterfall provides an ideal setting for traditional waterfall purification. The site offers favorable conditions for this practice, including its water volume, water quality, and height, as well as facilities and guidance for participants.
With careful instruction from experienced practitioners, even first-time participants can safely undertake this powerful experience and refresh both mind and body.
Discover the Deep History of “Women’s Koya”
Amanosan Kongo-ji Temple is believed to have been founded during the Nara period (729–749) by Gyoki, a revered Buddhist monk from Izumi Province who received the patronage of Emperor Shomu and became the first person in Japan to receive the rank of Great Buddhist Priest.
The temple is also said to have been a place where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) practiced during the Heian period.
Known as “Women’s Koya,” Kongo-ji was historically protected by successive imperial consorts and empresses. This special experience offers a rare opportunity to view its normally inaccessible National Treasure Buddhist statues while learning about the temple’s remarkable history directly from its head priest.
Taisho-Era Elegance, Local Cuisine & Historic Sake
Amami Onsen Nanten-en is a rare architectural gem that combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western-inspired modern design, reflecting the architectural style of the Taisho and early Showa periods. Built by renowned architect Kingo Tatsuno, the property was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2003.
From the rooms, guests can enjoy views of the surrounding Japanese garden through traditional shoji screens, with the landscape taking on a different character throughout the seasons. A distinctive gourd-shaped pond in front of the veranda attracts a variety of birds each morning, creating a peaceful retreat far from the noise of the city.
The cuisine at Nanten-en celebrates the local character of Amami, using ingredients nurtured by the region’s climate and traditions. The culinary team also works to revive rare local ingredients and traditional flavors, creating dishes that are visually beautiful, aromatic, and deeply rooted in the area.
Spend the night surrounded by the historic architecture of Kingo Tatsuno, savor the flavors of Kawachinagano, and discover the refined taste of Amanosake, a sake tradition dating back to 1718.
This is a private journey designed to experience a quieter, more authentic side of Japan — through its spiritual traditions, historic architecture, local cuisine, and craftsmanship.
